I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have service valves that can be turned off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating valve below or beside the cistern. If you can’t locate a tap, or that does not stop the leak, then turn off the mains water tap to stop all the water to your house.

Once that is sorted, give us a ring, whatever the day or time is. We will be there promptly to fix the leak.

While you wait for our plumber to arrive, begin cleaning up any water, place a bucket to catch any drips, and remove important items from the area. If the property water is turned off, also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps as well.
